Workout of the Day: HIIT

Looking for a way to get in shape fast? Looking for a big calorie burner? Looking for a genuinely fun workout? Well, look no further than HIIT!

I’m always up for trying new classes, so when I saw HIIT on LVAC’s schedule I thought I’d give it a shot! Talk about an amazing workout. It was only 30 minutes, but it brought my heart rate up and burned quite a bit of calories!

This particular HIIT (high intensity interval training) class consisted of a warm up, two blocks of work, and a cool down (abs). Each block of work had a series of exercises, which we did for 30 seconds each. After completing the series of exercises, we rested for about a minute and repeated the set twice more. This is commonly the format for a HIIT workout, but any workout that alternates between hard intervals of work and intervals of rest is considered one.

Here’s why HIIT is awesome.

1. Busy schedule, no excuses!!

HIIT can be done in as little as 15 minutes. You could easily fit it into your morning routine! The best part is that this type of training can burn more calories than running on the treadmill for the same amount of time! It’s super efficient!

2. Bye bye fat.

HIIT puts your body’s repair cycle into hyperdrive, which helps your body burn fat and calories in the 24 hours following the workout. How cool is that.

3. Hello healthy heart.

HIIT pushes the heart into that anaerobic zone. The more consistent you become with these types of workouts, the more time you can handle being in this zone. HIIT builds endurance!

4. No equipment, no problem.

Although you can use equipment to intensify HIIT workouts, it’s not necessary to get the benefits of this type of training! All you really need is your body weight. Exercises such as jumping jacks, tuck jumps, burpees, and high knees make amazing HIIT exercises!

5. Lose weight but not muscle

Experts have said that steady state cardio actually promotes muscle loss. But luckily, there’s science behind the fact that HIIT workouts trigger weight loss from fat stores, not muscle!

6. Keeps your metabolism humming

HIIT stimulates the production of HGH (human growth hormone) by up to 450% in the 24 hours following the workout. Holy crap! HGH is responsible for increased calorie burn, therefore a HIIT workout will keep your metabolism humming for an entire day after you’re done working out! Nice.

7. No gym needed

HIIT can be done anywhere. Wherever you have enough room to do a burpee, you have enough room to finish an entire HIIT workout. The bedroom, backyard, park,…, the possibilities are endless!

8. It kicks your booty!

HIIT workouts are nice and tough, and can always get more challenging! But that’s what makes them fun and interesting! You definitely won’t regret any of these workouts.
