It’s official, I’ve made it four days without running and I haven’t lost my mind. I’m getting there, but it hasn’t happened yet 🙂 The soreness from Sunday is fading away, and it’s actually making me a little upset! I know, weird, but every time I struggle up the stairs, I’m reminded of the awesome 13.1 miles I ran.
Since I’m not running, I may as well talk about running. Yesterday was National Running Day! I’m a day late (I still wanted to participate in WIAW yesterday), but I want to talk about why I run and why it’s such a huge part of my life.
My story is this (and I’ve told it before if you have followed my blog over the past couple of months):
I picked up my love of running in the sixth grade. At the time, I was pretty chubby and always felt very self conscious. To make matters worse, I was teased by classmates.
In the fall of my sixth grade year, my middle school formed a running club. My parents suggested that I check it out, so I did. I didn’t like it one bit when I started. It was painful. But eventually, I got better. I started to thin out and speed up. After a while, running became natural to me. Before I knew it, I was addicted!
Running has been a huge part of my life for years. Had I not picked up this hobby, I don’t know what would currently be in store for me! I continue to run for several reasons. Here are 13 (In honor of my favorite distance of 13.1 🙂 )
1. Running allows me to eat a lot
I need to eat more to fuel all my runs? Don’t mind if I do!! Running = huge amount of calories burned. Aka gotta replenish those calories somehow. I also love eating carbs (which luckily runners need a lot of. Score!!)
2. Running helps keep me fit.
Along with the last one, running is an amazing way to get that heart rate up. You burn about 100 calories per mile, so it’s a great way to get lean fast!
Sometimes life plagues us with high levels of undue stress. Believe it or not, a run does wonders at getting rid of this. I can’t tell you how many times running has saved me from spending money on a therapist.
Talk about a cheap sport! Sure, running shoes and race entries can get pricey, but it doesn’t come even close to the club fees of soccer and football.
5. You can run anywhere!
On vacation? No problem! Running in new places is a blast. In fact, this brings me to my next point…
A race is a perfect excuse to get out of town. Three out of my four half marathons have been out of state. We love to take the opportunity to travel!
My runs provide a daily dose of fresh air! I enjoy getting up early to chase the sunrise.
Whether it’s getting attacked by geese, seeing a coyote, or discovering a farmers market, each run has something different in store!
My runs allow for plenty of “me” time where I can reflect on everything that’s going on in my life.
10. Running forces me to stay healthy.
I don’t think I would be such a health enthusiast if it weren’t for running. Knowing that I must eat clean to be the best runner I can be helps keep me accountable for what I put in my mouth.
Whether they like it or not, my friends and parents always hear every detail about every race (even the details they probably wish they hadn’t heard).
12. Running keeps me motivated.
Through running, I have learned how to form goals and work towards achieving those goals. This skill helps me in all aspects of life, especially school!
13. Running is just freaking awesome.
When you first get into running, it’s going to suck a little. But trust me, if you stick with it you WILL start to enjoy it. My runs are always my favorite part of the day!!
- Why do you love running?
- Do you talk about running a lot during breaks or rest days? (I always do)
- ITS THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR VEGAS PEOPLE!! What are you up to this summer?
